Fake news may be a relatively new term but it is hardly a new concept. Long before the term was coined, and definitely long before any one of us existed, it was referred to as misinformation. Misinformation has been used by governments, the media and powerful individuals since the millennia. However, at no time in the history of mankind have you been able to be served up your misinformation as robustly or relentlessly as today because of the internet.
Although the main stream media would like you to believe that Russian collusion is a new thing, it's not, it’s been going on for decades. Before the internet, Russian spies infiltrated the American media and spread misinformation at will. It was that little secret that no one wanted to talk about but everyone knew was happening. Today, because of the internet, that misinformation is relentless.
The truth is, the vast majority of the "news" you see on news aggregate sites is not even news. They’re opinion pieces written by bloggers who are contributors to well financed blogs who are paid by how many views their opinion pieces get. That has led to the phenomenon know as “clickbait” in which the contributor/blogger writes an outlandish headline or article trying to lure you into clicking on their article so they can get paid.
Unfortunately, even some of the once great pillars of American TV and print media who have seen their viewership and readership diminish drastically due to the internet have joined in the foray. We have seen people who have tried to claim that fake news is the greatest threat to Democracy, free debate and the Western order. We doubt it because ultimately, that demise will occur because of the stupid and ignorant masses regardless of fake news.
